The Lake John State Wildlife Area is located a few miles west of Walden, Colorado and the dirt road is smooth enough for an average passenger car. This natural alpine lake is situated in sage brush country at the base of the mountains, so the setting is as picturesque as can be. There are a couple of developed lakeside campgrounds and one is managed like an RV resort. Primitive camping is allowed along the shoreline and there is a boat launch, which suits the needs of anglers. In fact, Lake John is most famous for being a fishing destination, because it is stocked with rainbow trout and cutthroat trout, so be sure to pack the tackle box for the trip! Lake John is surrounded by a sagebrush wilderness and grassy ranches, so this is a good place to observe pronghorn antelope roaming through the hills. Badgers roam this area too and they can be spotted along the dirt road while driving slow. The birding action can be good at Lake John during the migration season, while alpine meadow songbirds can be spotted year round. Eagles and ospreys fish in these waters too, which are always exciting to see. For those who seek a pleasant camping spot that offers an easy going venue, the Lake John State Wildlife Area definitely is a good destination to keep in mind. Fishing, viewing wildlife and the opportunity to just plain old goof off in the alpine sunshine certainly is appealing, while plenty more outdoor adventures await in this region. Walden is a nice convenience for stocking up and wild moose have been known to stroll down main street. Lake John definitely is an angler's dream come true and the wildlife viewing is top notch too!

Destination West YouTube channel! https://www.youtube.com/@DestinationWestOrg *This website will be going through renovations soon. Separate destination articles will be combined after the videos replace the outdated photo gallery system. As many readers know, most of the writing was done on the fly while camping, so many articles read like a rough draft. The articles will be cleaned up and edited. Many of the old photos were straight out of the camera due camping limitations and the quality will be bumped up. Another goal is to make navigating the index pages easier and combining separate articles will help. This website will continue into the future and your patience is greatly appreciated!
